So what kind of Benefits do university students in Guelph have at their disposal?
The current (2024) coverage that university students have for mental health practitioners is a combined $750 and the benefits can be used towards 80% of the cost of the mental health services.
So if a UofG student wanted to work with a counsellor whos services cost $160 per 1 hour session, they would pay for the appointment out of pocket and then submit their receipt to the “my student plan” portal and they would be reimbursed for $128 (80%) leaving the final cost to the student at $32 per session.
With a combined $750 coverage limit for mental health services, assuming the student was not using the funds for other services, at $128 per session they would have that 80% coverage for 5 full sessions.
So how does a student access these benefits for counselling?
University of Guelph Student Health benefits are organized by the Central Student Association Using “My Student Plan”, and the insurance is provided by the Canada Life Assurance Company.
Check out this link more information about your student benefits and how to use them
What if my parents have benefits?
If your parents have partial benefit coverage that you are included under, then in many cases you can use your student benefits to cover the remaining amount!
What if I need more sessions and can’t afford them?
If you think you might need more than 5 or 6 sessions with a counsellor and are unsure if you would be able to afford the cost, please reach out to Niilo Wellness for more information about reduced rate therapy for which there are limited spaces available.
At the reduced rate the student benefits will still cover 80%, but allow the coverage to be used for more sessions.
